少打无谓之仗 does not end at the door. 始计 asks whether to enter. 作战 asks what you burn each day once you have entered, and which calendar day must stop it.
Sun Tzu does not teach you to make the fight more impressive. He opens the ledger. A thousand four-horse chariots, a thousand leather wagons, a hundred thousand armoured men, grain hauled a thousand li. A thousand gold pieces a day, and only then does the army move. No clash yet. The state is already paying. A family, a classroom, a well, a letter already sent: the same ledger. People, time, trust, and what will be left for the next cycle.
This page is not a growth manual. The old note on this site that once spoke of startup speed has already been rewritten as a stop-date judgment. This page is the long edition of that same job. The live chapter names it plainly: consumption itself is harm; a long campaign leaves both sides worse. Read that chapter after this note, not instead of it.
What 作战 actually asks
The opening is not a slogan. 其用战也胜，久则钝兵挫锐，攻城则力屈，久暴师则国用不足. Force that lasts, even when it “wins,” dulls the weapon, breaks the edge, and empties the state. Victory here is first a clean end. Best if the fight never starts. Next if it ends on a date you wrote down. A conflict with no aim, no ceiling, and no review will thin both rooms.
故兵闻拙速，未睹巧之久也. 夫兵久而国利者，未之有也. Clumsy and short beats clever and long. Delay is not patience. Delay hands sharpness and grain to the calendar.
故不尽知用兵之害者，则不能尽知用兵之利也. If you cannot name the harm, the benefit is a mood. Harm is people gone, money gone, no teacher left for the next term, no casing left for the next well. If the benefit spends those, it is not a benefit.
sun-tzu.ai folds this into the third of four moves: if you must move, count the burn, write the stop date. 始计 is only the first move. Skip it, and 作战 cannot save you; you are paying for an aim you never confirmed. Skip 作战, and 谋攻 is already late: the relationship has not changed, and the bill is running.
Four lines for one day
Do not write “cost” as a total. Write a day. A day is the unit of this chapter. 久 is days stacked.
People. Who is actually awake in this? A quote, a meeting, a class, a well watch: those are hours of a person. A person is not a resource. A person has a next cycle. Put the same person into a conflict with no stop date and the edge dulls first, then the house empties.
Money. 日费千金 is not ornament. Travel, counsel, samples, overtime, a well opened twice: gold. 远输则百姓贫. If the cost has to be hauled a long way, the people nearby are hurt first, not the people across the table.
Trust. A vague letter, a slip of two days, one more “let’s see” spends trust. Spent trust makes the next sentence more expensive. The chapter says take what the state already has, and feed the army from the ground you are on. That is not a licence to plunder. It is a ban on feeding a nameless burn from your own foundation.
Time. Time is the raw material of the next cycle. 久暴师则国用不足. Stay out long enough and there is no next cycle to win. A class that will not write a stop date teaches consumption. A well that will not write a stop date teaches fatigue.
If you cannot fill those four lines, you are not in a fight. You are idling in a habit. Idling has a daily fee. The invoice arrives at the end of the month.
How to write the stop date
Open a blank page. Title it with the object, not with your hope.
- Object: the thing that has already started.
- Daily burn: people, money, trust, time. One checkable sentence each.
- Ceiling: which number breaks first if you spend one more day.
- Stop date: a day on the calendar, not “we’ll see.”
- The one signal that would justify continuing. Not a mood. Not “they have not yielded yet.”
If you cannot write it, stop. That is not fear. Entry without a stop date is already 久. 久则钝兵挫锐. Dull the edge, then add people, and you have spent the next cycle early.
A stop date is not a punishment. It is a date the people nearby can go home. A date the other room can change the plan. A date you can review. The method page asks for three sentences: enter or stay out, what you verified, what would make the next cycle better. With a stop date, those three sentences stay short.
Do not turn the stop date into a threat. The chapter’s rewards, flags, and “treat well the soldiers you take” are about a clean close, not about turning people into fuel. 胜敌而益强, read here, does not mean you are stronger because you crushed someone. Stronger first means: after you stop, the house is still there, and so is the next cycle.
A sentence you do not send is cheaper than a mobilised lie
Someone has already entered. The quote went out. The meeting is on the calendar. Class has begun. Pipe is moving. 作战 is the chapter for that hour. 始计 asked whether to quote into fog. 作战 asks whether the daily mobilisation already costs more than the job.
A mobilised lie is the most expensive kind of duration. The number was invented. The window was false. The stop date was “wait until they soften.” They will invent a number too. Then someone “wins” a job that should not continue. Both sides are worse.
故智将务食于敌 is not a lesson in eating the other person. It is a lesson in not spending twenty of your own measures of grain on a burn that has only a mood. One measure taken from the ground you are already on equals twenty hauled from home. Today that reads: do not spend twenty measures of household patience on a thread with no ceiling.
If the five factors are clear, the aim is worth the cost, and the system will hold, you enter, and you write the stop. 谋攻 still prefers changing the plan and the relationship before force. Completeness outranks breaking. You can enter a spec, a class, or a repair without making the other person into an enemy. Anger is not a reason. 杀敌者，怒也；取敌之利者，货也. Anger can start a hand. Only a real good can stop a hand so the next cycle can begin. A burn with anger and no good will last.
Stopping is not losing
Stopping is not fear, and it is not laziness. It is a judgment you can defend in the next review. Stopping after the people have already left is defeat, not a stop date.
Stopping is also not a pose. If the daily numbers are still inside the line, the one signal has appeared, and the aim is still worth the cost, you continue until that day. Clever duration is the usual self-deception: I can optimise one more day. The chapter has not seen that kind of cleverness profit a state.
The fire chapter will ask whether you left a way out. The spy chapter will ask which fact is missing. Those come later. This chapter asks one thing: where is the cost of one more day. If you cannot write it, do not spend it.
Teaching and in-house training are for teams that want the same judgment written together. They are not for learning how to press the burn onto someone else. Contact is for a real conflict, a real class, or a real piece of content, not for help grinding the other room down.
作战 is the second chapter because everything after 始计 is more expensive by the day. The kindness to people nearby, and to people under heaven, is the same move: do not leave them overnight inside a ledger that has no stop date.
